What if massage became maintenance, not emergency repair?
What if you didn’t have to wait until your body was shouting for your attention before you listened to it?
A lot of the people who come to see me for massage don’t actually come because they want a massage.
They come because they’re uncomfortable.
Their shoulders are constantly tense. Their upper back is aching. Their neck feels tight. They’ve got that one niggly area that just won’t go away, or they’ve reached the point where they’re thinking, “I really need to do something about this.”
And I completely understand it.
Life gets busy. We get used to how our bodies feel and sometimes we don’t even realise just how much tension we’ve been carrying until somebody works into it.
I’ve had clients apologise to me because they have “so much tension” in their shoulders.
My answer is always the same:
“Don’t apologise.”
I’m certainly not happy that you’re uncomfortable, but I know how much of a difference you’re going to feel when we work on it.
And that’s one of the things I love most about massage.
Seeing someone arrive feeling tight, uncomfortable and restricted, and then watching them leave feeling lighter, looser and more relaxed is such a lovely part of what I do.
But here’s where I think massage can become even more valuable…
What if your massage wasn’t an emergency repair?
Your first massage might be exactly that.
You come because something hurts, something feels tight or you’ve simply had enough of feeling uncomfortable.
We work on the areas that need attention, and you leave thinking:
“Why have I never done this before?”
But one massage isn’t usually going to magically undo months or years of tension.
And that’s okay.
I don’t see massage as a quick fix.
I see it as a process.
Peeling back the layers
One of the ways I explain regular massage to my clients is that we’re peeling back the layers.
You might come to me for the first time with a lot of tension through your shoulders and upper back.
So that’s where we focus.
You come back again and we work into those areas.
Then, eventually, you might say:
“You know what? That tension I originally came to you with isn’t really bothering me anymore… but now I’ve noticed this area.”
And actually, that’s a really positive thing.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that a new problem has appeared.
Sometimes the tension was always there. It was just hidden underneath something that was causing you more discomfort.
As we start to release one layer, we become more aware of another.
So we work on that.
Then another.
And another.
Until eventually, you might come into your appointment and say:
“I don’t actually have anywhere that needs concentrating on today.”
And that’s when your massage can become maintenance.
From fixing the problem to maintaining how you feel
This is probably one of my favourite stages of working with a regular client.
I’ve seen them come in for the first time carrying so much tension, and then over time, the reason they originally came to me isn’t something they think about anymore.
Their shoulders don’t constantly ache.
Their back doesn’t feel as tight.
They aren’t noticing that niggling pain every day.
And instead of waiting until everything builds up again, massage becomes part of their normal self-care.
It’s no longer:
“I’ve got so much tension, I desperately need a massage.”
It’s:
“It’s time for my massage.”
There’s a big difference.
It’s the same reason we don’t wait until something completely stops working before we look after it.
Our bodies are constantly adapting to what we do every day.
Our posture, our work, how much we move, how much time we spend sitting, carrying children, exercising, driving, sleeping and even the amount of stress we’re carrying can all affect how our bodies feel.
Sometimes we don’t notice it happening because we’ve simply become used to it.
Until we have a massage and suddenly realise:
“Oh… I didn’t realise how tight I actually was.”
Prevention rather than waiting until you’re struggling
I think there is something to be said for looking after yourself before you’re at the point where you desperately need to.
That doesn’t mean you have to have a massage every week.
It doesn’t mean there is one perfect schedule that everyone should follow.
Your body, your lifestyle and your needs are all different.
For some people, regular monthly massage works really well.
For others, it might be every 6–8 weeks.
And sometimes you might simply need to book when your body tells you it’s time.
The important thing is learning to notice those signs before you’re completely overwhelmed by them.
Massage can be one part of that.
Alongside movement, posture, rest, hydration, sleep and simply giving yourself time to switch off, regular massage can become a lovely way of checking in with your body.
And for me, that’s what personalised massage is all about.
Your massage should change as you do
I don’t offer a one-size-fits-all massage.
When you book a treatment with me, we have a consultation first.
We talk about how you’re feeling, where you’re holding tension, what you’d like from your treatment and the pressure that feels right for you.
Your massage can then be tailored around you.
That might mean focusing heavily on your upper back and shoulders one time.
Another appointment might be more about full-body relaxation.
We might incorporate deeper pressure, hot stones, aromatherapy or a gentler approach depending on what you need on that particular day.
Because you don’t feel exactly the same every day.
So why should your massage be exactly the same?
And it’s not just adults who can benefit from learning to look after themselves
I’ve also introduced a 30-minute teen massage because I really believe that learning to look after your wellbeing can start from a younger age.
My usual massage treatments start from 45 minutes because I don’t feel that 30 minutes gives me enough time to properly do what I want to do for an adult treatment.
But with teenagers, I approach things differently.
The aim isn’t to hyper-focus on one area or work deeply into lots of tension.
It’s about introducing them to massage in a gentle, calm and unhurried way.
Thirty minutes gives them enough time to settle into the experience, relax and have some gentle work to help release tension.
And if they enjoy it and would like a longer treatment in the future, they can always book one.
I love the idea of encouraging the next generation to understand that looking after yourself isn’t something you only do when you’re struggling.
It’s something you can make part of your wellbeing.
I’ve also had the opportunity to take my treatments into people’s homes for mobile spa experiences and parties, including working with younger generations, and it’s been lovely to see how naturally wellbeing can become part of those experiences too.
So, what if your massage became maintenance?
Maybe you don’t need to wait until your shoulders are rock hard.
Maybe you don’t need to wait until your back is aching every day.
Maybe you don’t need to wait until you’re thinking:
“I really, really need a massage.”
Maybe your next massage could simply be because you want to maintain how you’re feeling.
Because you’ve worked through those layers.
Because the tension that originally brought you through my door isn’t controlling your day anymore.
Because massage has become one of those little rituals that helps you feel more comfortable in your own body.
And honestly, that’s one of my favourite things to see.
I love the tension-releasing massages. I love seeing someone walk out of their first appointment feeling completely different to when they walked in.
But I also love the maintenance clients.
The ones I’ve seen through that journey.
The ones who can now say:
“I don’t have that problem anymore.”
And that’s when I know we’ve worked through what needed working through.
Your massage isn’t necessarily about fixing you.
It’s about listening to your body, giving it some attention and maintaining the way you want to feel.
Ready to make massage part of your maintenance rather than your emergency repair?
If you’re carrying tension, feeling uncomfortable or simply feel like your body is asking for some attention, I’d love to chat with you about whether a personalised massage could be right for you.
You don’t have to know exactly what treatment to book.
That’s what I’m here for.
We can have a chat, talk about how you’re feeling and work out what would suit you best.
